The novel set in the eighteenth century. It focuses on the Gadfly's British grandparents and great-grandparents. Beatrice Rivers Telford, married a Warwickshire squire to escape the forcible advances of her stepfather, develops warmth and sympathy through the adoption of a Cornish orphan. Through her association with the poor in Cornwall she sees and tries to bridge the gap between classes.
