As soon as he reached Shanghai in August 1937, Reed realised he should not have come back to China. The Japanese had landed 35,000 troops north of the city and Chiang Kai-Shek had rushed his crack 88th Division to oppose them. Reed wanted nothing to do with it all. Reluctantly he became involved with a group of refugees sailing in a rotting junk up the Yangtze to Nanking. With the Chinese Nationalist Army there surely they would be safe in Nanking?
