Günther Binding Columns were of major importance in the architecture of the Early and High Middle Ages. Since the materials were precious and required a high level of workmanship, columns were often reused from late antique buildings, such as those found in Rome and Ravenna. This volume deals with the question whether the use of spolia represented a symbolic significance that goes beyond mere economical considerations and also provides an overview of their manufacture and use.
