If the gypsy girl Lou had not climbed a sun-washed Yorkshire hill on a June day in 1900 she might have followed the tinker's cart all her life, and been far happier for it. But the light flashed on something bright at the summit and Lou (who could not resist the call of the road) left the cold valley and climbed upward toward the sunny slopes.
