Crossed Hearts is possessed of more than spirits. Will Struthers is enlisted to clear Crossed Hearts, so its current owner, Ron Carlton, can open it as a bed and breakfast. Will has cleared a lot of houses, but Crossed Hearts begins mocking him before he even crosses the threshold. Not only does Will have to determine and subdue what is possessing Crossed Hearts, but he has to face and overcome his personal demons. Ron Carlton is a direct descendent of the original builder of the house. Crossed Hearts' legacy started out bad and has only grown worse. One of the early owners, Alton Greyson, dabbled in black witchcraft and effectively overcame all opponents and obstacles in the enlargement of his fortune. Alton disappeared in a mysterious fire witnessed (and possibly started) by his daughter. Will enlists the aide of his sister, Sarah, who has her own special talents. They learn that Alton died while trying to harness the energy of an ancient spirit, the Shayaten. According to Indian legend, the Shayaten existed before the first people and, every 100 years, tries to reclaim the earth. Will and Sarah try to learn all they can about the Shayaten and how to defeat it while researching the history of Crossed Hearts. Complicating their efforts is Ron's nephew, Patrick, who seeks to use the spirit of Alton to capture the power of the Shayaten for himself. Alton, however, has his own plans.
