George Sand's fictionalised account of her notorious affair with the poet Alfred de Musset caused a sensation on its publication two years after his death in 1859. This Woman, This Man (Elle et Lui) is not only unlike any of her other novels, it is also the most autobiographical work of one of the great female trailblazers in French literature.
