Spittin' Image: A Youth Baseball Novel
Ken Roberts Steve Holloway was the greatest baseball player in Westmount High history. His size kept himfrom a pro career, but now he is preparing his son, Matt, for tryouts in the local Little League. However, he is tragically killed in a workplace accident a few months before. A devastated Matt doesn't want to try out, but a supportive family convinces him that his father would have liked him to at least try. Matt makes the Mustangs, but at first his small size and lack of experience limit his playing time. The Mustangs start slowly and the Spartans, led by big Frankie Kester, the school bully, seem to be a cinch to repeat as league champions. But the Mustangs, led by Matt, somehow claw their way back into the championship game.Matt orchestrates some clever plays that enable his team to be league champs. He finds that baseball is first and foremost a game for thinkers, not just physical skills. Matt also learns why his community calls him the "spittin' image" of his late father.
