Hiding Horst: Memoirs of a Jewish Boy
Becky White Many are familiar with the story of Anne Frank but don't know that she was one of thousands hiding from the Nazis in Holland. Hiding Horst is the true story of a 12-year-old boy, Horst Ferber, who went into hiding and remained there for three years. At the time that Hitler and his Nazis took power, the Jews in Holland numbered 140,000. By the end of 1942, 110,000 of them had been deported to concentration camps, where all but 5,000 were murdered. Another 30,000 Jews were hidden by Dutch citizens, who risked their own lives and shared their meager rations. Through the heroic efforts of the Dutch, most of the Jews who hid in Holland survived. Horst Ferber was one of these. Fortunatley for him, he did not obey his deportation orders. Hiding Horst describes a young boy's battle with loneliness, hunger, and fear.
