American Scene Photography: Martin Z. Margulies Collection
Bonnie Clearwater Miami-based collector Martin Z. Margulies owns one of the world's most significant collections of modern and contemporary art and over the past two decades has avidly collected photography that reflects his interest in the human condition. On view at NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale from November 2, 2014 through March 22, 2015, American Scene Martin Z. Margulies Collection showcases the work of 70 photographers and more than 150 of their photographs dating from the early 1900's to today. Exhibition The catalog includes an Introduction by Bonnie Clearwater, Director and Chief Curator, NSU Museum of Art, and curator of the exhibition, followed by her engaging interview with Mr. Margulies about his photography collection that documents the American scene from the early 20th century to the present. Terri Weissman, Associate Professor of Art History, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, has contributed an insightful essay-Realism and Storytelling in American Scene Photography. Seventy-one of the exhibition's photographs are reproduced in the catalog, including works by, among others, Margaret Bourke-White, Walker Evans, Lewis Hine, Dorothea Lange, Barbara Probst, Ed Ruscha, Ben Shahn, Aaron Siskind, Joel Sternfeld, and Weegee.
