First published in 1868, Tales by a Female Detective contains two stories featuring a female The Unraveled Mystery and The Unknown Weapon . In The Unraveled Mystery a detective sits in her study with a visiting doctor. Between them they work out the probable identity of a dissected murder victim found in a carpetbag on the shore of the river Thames. The Unknown Weapon investigates the unusual death of young Squire Petleigh.
