Tall good-looking Pat Evans is an arrogant and unpopular prefect at Melling. She is especially disliked by Roddy Blake. During this summer term, Miss Pickering, Melling’s gentle headmistress, asks head girl, Franny to befriend Pat, and to encourage Roddy to be friendly too. Roddy does not believe that Pat can be anything other than “horrible”, as the Lower Third describe her, but as the term goes on it begins to look as though Roddy is wrong. Even Susan, Roddy’s irrepressible little sister, becomes convinced that Pat is nice and after some misunderstandings Pat finds friendship with both Roddy and Franny. But that is not the end of the story, for Pat is accused of cheating during exam week. Can this be true?
