Dozens of children have gone missing, and Naatos, a shapeshifter, suspects a devious mindreader named Salanca. Salanca has hidden her vicious schemes because, though the other Neyeb can read minds, she knows how to shroud her thoughts deeply. Naatos must act swiftly and covertly to avert the murder of the stolen children even as he has been rejected yet again for receiving a Neyeb bride.
