A young stonemason is stabbed in Saint Martin's Church on Trinity Sunday. Cordwainer searches for his killer against the backdrop of York's Corpus Christi Day mystery plays. But the real mystery is harder to solve: was he killed because of the secret his pregnant wife is hiding, or does the answer lie among the stone carvers vying for the honor of carving a statue of Saint Peter to grace York Minster?
