The Moore children live in a country vicarage in Cornwall. When the story opens they have just heard rumours that the grey house, Tregowan, across the valley, is to be sold, a house that has been in the Frome family for generations. As their great friend, Dora Frome, is involved in this calamity, they are horror-stricken, for they know what this will mean for her, and as it is a question of money they plan to earn some for her and save the house.
