This is a first hand account of how the 1980s nationalised railway was operated. During a period where re-organisation was deflecting attention from operations it was the Area Manager's job to ensure that standards were upheld. This is a diary written as the events happened showing the successes and failures involved. The author has added italicised comments from a modern perspective.
