Peggy Gaddis Ivy Lester has been stuck in Europe since France fell and the Nazis took power. She has been living in France for five years and now just wants to get back to the United States. It has taken her weeks to get to Lisbon. She is going to board a ship bound for the States that evening. While waiting for the departure time, Ivy meets a handsome young American reporter named Jon Coombes. He is hoping to get on the same ship with her. Ivy thinks that will be grand.
But Ivy is nearly hit by a car and in the confusion her passport and ticket for passage on the ship are stolen. She's frantic with worry until the person who took the precious items tells her the plan he has for her. If she does what they want her to, she will get back to the States as she planned. The alternative, being stuck in Lisbon without a passport with thousands of other people trying to get passage to America, seems hopeless. Ivy hates the very thought of his proposal but what choice does she have? Perhaps on the way she can get someone's help. Maybe from Jon Coombes who does manage to get aboard in time. One thing was for certain: her carefree journey back home has been turned into a nightmare.
