Riverridge was a beautiful southern plantation, which, restored to its pre-eminence after the Civil war by the money and social grace of Jennifer, the English bride, was the setting for a fine family life. In Jennifer's old age, Isabel, beautiful, mercenary and determined to make her future secure, came to Riverridge as a companion, and set out methodically to make the place her own.
