This short volume is a condensed, rewritten, updated, and otherwise considerably revised version of The United Combined Edition, Seventh Edition. It reflects a division of chronological interest on the part of the two authors, with Jordan's interest being in early American history through the Civil War, and Litwack's during and since that revolutionary event to the present.
