João Simões Lopes Neto is one of the greatest authors of brazilian literature. His writtings are full of passion, wild beauty and bloody adventure. His experiments with language made him a hard-reading author and his books are almost impossible to translate. That explains why he is so little known outside of his homeland -- the southern brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. His work deals with the image, the history and the imaginary of the "gaúcho", the rural man of southern Brazil, Uruguai and Argentina. In Lopes Neto's pages the gaucho is a nomad, a warrior, a rude philosopher, a poet of the nature and above all a story-teller. His most celebrated book, Contos Gauchescos (i.e. "Tales of the Gauchos") is a series of short stories told by a character named Blau Nunes, an old wanderer of the southern "pampas", who invites the reader to share his memories of love, death, friendship, villany and heroism.
