Welcome to the Monster Super Heroes "Parts of Speech" Series As a 5th grade teacher, and as a parent, I find that teaching the essential eight parts of speech is boring to children and hard for them to remember. I know many teachers who also struggle with the same thing all over the United States today. I wrote this first set of books as a fun way for kids, grades 1-5, to remember the parts of speech, enjoy fun stories, and all without pulling teeth, so to speak. I would like to start bridging the gap between home and school through incorporating standards vocabulary in children's story books. As teachers, we continuously hear how children need to learn academic concepts through real life connections, they need to be relevent, and yet we leave all the academic vocabulary in the classroom. It is no wonder children have a hard time learing, they don't see how academic concepts help us in our everyday lives, they are our world, they are user friendly! This is not a text book series, rather a children's book series with fun stories, that familiarize children with academic language. What parent doesn't love stories that can both entertain AND help their children? The audience would be large, as it isn't genre specific, and these books would appeal to anyone who has children. I have discussed this idea with colleagues, who agreed, these would be wonderful sets of books. Parents could use these stories with children who struggle, for homeschooling, or just as fun stories to give prior knowledge to connect with future information. There are books, already published, that teach how to use picture books to teach concepts, such as parts of speech, but my books would use academic language right in the stories. In my books, each story has visuals, and word associations to help children remember the lessons. There is also an italisized remember this special hint, in each story, where I have included my own helpful tricks for children to remember the jobs of the parts of speech. I have used these hints in my classroom with much success. I have also included an interactive page to check to see if the children understand, and to have them review, once again, to aid in memory. As a sidenote, I have been "Teacher of the Year" in my district and am known for raising ISAT scores, achieving highest improvement, all based on creative, humorous, research based, cutting edge and innovative methods of teaching. Isats are very important to education today, but the academic vocabulary is often hard for children to understand. According to brain research, the reason children struggle with standardized tests often is because of their lack of exposure, and understanding of, the academic vocabulary. These books offer that exposure and understanding. It is my hope to create many sets of books, all using the national education standards based vocabulary today. I have already used characters to teach my fifth graders standards from the math, language arts, reading and science standards. The results have been nothing short of amazing, with test scores, each year, at the top in my district. I have researched this idea, and I would be the first to create books explicitly using standards vocabulary. My stories have also been created with many research based methods included, to help children remember and comprehend otherwise boring curricular standards. With this set, and others to follow, the children would be exposed to the concepts over and over through out the stories, in a positive fun way, visually, audibly, vocally, using humor, and word associations. The academic vocabulary is woven into fun, exciting stories, rather than being taught as acedimic rules. If a child enjoys, and understand a concept, they will claim ownership of it and it will form a schema in their minds from which to connect any future information.
