Kate was terribly alone. For company there was only Mrs. Beer, who came in to cook and clean each day, and Kate's brother, five-year-old Thomas, whom Kate loved more than anyone else in the world. But Thomas wouldn't talk. So when Aunt Rhoda appeared in the quiet village and introduced herself as a relative, Kate was more than happy to have her move into their home. There was an air of mystery about Aunt Rhoda that intrigued Kate. But as Aunt Rhoda stayed on in the house, her presence became frightening. And when Thomas was threatened, Kate became terrified, realizing that she was being drawn into a battle between good and evil that could destroy her little brother and even herself.
