Mitya leaves his home in 1579 to follow Yermak Timofeyev, the Chieftain of the Cossacks whose band of Christians unlawfully fights the horrible acts of Ivan the Terrible. Wehn Yermak was a young boy, Ivan's soldiers had strangled Yermak's parents while he watched. While Mitja fights, he realizes that soldiers need treatment after battles, so he begins transporting medicine and herbs instead of killing. But when Yermak drowns, Mitya, after more than five years, returns home and becomes a doctor, trying to help others.
