The Book of Psalms, or Psalter, is a work of literary art, as well as a devotional masterpiece. This translation of the psalms from the Episcopal Church’s Book of Common Prayer is rightly regarded as one that preserves both the meaning and poetry of the original Hebrew. Although many know the psalms primarily in the sonorous language of the King James Bible—the Twenty-Third psalm, for example, will never be anything but the King James version for most English speakers of a certain age—these renditions have a contemporary sound and rhythm that has established them firmly in the minds and hearts of modern Christians and others who read them in private meditation or recite them in public worship. There are many printed versions of these psalms but until now none for the Kindle reader. A brief introduction offers historical and literary contexts for the psalms.
