A Pilgrim's Journey into the Soul: The Camino de Santiago
Mark Shepherd At forty-four, I had everything a normal middleclass lifestyle could a house in the suburbs, a car, and a career of twenty years that afforded enough money to live reasonably. But with that came all the stresses of modern daily life.
The final straw came when most days involved looking into an empty whisky bottle and battling depression, waiting for some miracle to occur that would suddenly make everything all okay, but of course never came. So, I took a drastic measure for a drastic sold my house and car and took a career break.
Now, with a rucksack full of clothing as my only worldly possessions and some savings in the bank, I went to Spain and decided to do a pilgrimage walk across northern Spain that I knew little about. All I knew was that it was a distance of eight hundred and fifty kilometres and done by tens of thousands of people every year, many trying to find answers.
I was about to walk the Camino de Santiago.
