Malo Kemp is the owner of the fastest commercial ship out of Rivera. He's got more work than he can handle, and so his partner Dolores suggests he take on an apprentice. But this apprentice comes with a past - and Malo already has more than enough 'past' to contend with. He thinks he's free of the Confederation and the claims they have on him; but instead he gains a mission that will take him out to the edges of grey space, and an alien presence whose reputation for death he knows only too well; and this time it's not just Malo's life that is on the line.
