"When spring came on this 25th day of April, we started with two horses and a covered wagon to Arizona. All the money we had was $15. All the family walked but Father, Mother, and baby sister, who was too young to do much walking. We had three dogs that went with us. We followed the Santa Fe Railroad. There were roads built alongside the railroad tracks. When we got out in western Kansas, there were few people and only a few ranches. No timber was available so we kids would take a grain sack and go out and look for cow chips. They made a good fire to cook on. We had a Dutch oven and a big frying pan. Every meal was pancakes. We had a cast iron pot that Mother cooked beans with salt pork in at night."
