The Bridge on Parker Road
Tom Wessels A midnight séance in a cemetery on a moonless night isn’t half as scary as it sounds – as long as you have your friends with you. Skipping stones is a great way to pass a lazy summer day – especially if you have some stuff you need to think about. And 12-year-old Jo Weller has a lot to think about during the summer of 1952. Mostly about Will Flowers. Jo had never met a black boy her own age before until she meets Will standing on the other side of the creek. She senses immediately that something is wrong, and it isn’t just that his glasses keep sliding off his face. There is something about the way his shoulders slump and the way he looks at her. Those eyes – they can’t hide his sadness. Jo needs to find out more. What she discovers is more than what she bargained for as she learns to be Will’s friend – even though others view their friendship as wrong. The Bridge on Parker Road is about close friends surviving close calls and looking to the future as they confront the past.
