Kipps: The Story of a Simple Soul

Mr Kipps was a simple man. An assistant in Shalford's drapery establishment, his was a straightforward, uncomplicated life. But to this, he added layer upon layer of pretence until he had become an entirely new creation - and one that could rightly rise to the next social echelon. Unfortunately for Kipps, the people he meets there are also mere social constructs, yet rather more sophisticated than he and it is all he can do to prevent his mask from sliding.
