Few scholars realize that the first work written about Ireland by an American was an historical study composed by John Quincy Adams, the 6th President of the United States. The work - an epic poem about the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland in 1170 - was meant as a pensee on Irish history as well an allegorical work aimed at individuals and forces that were undermining the new American republic. The scholars associated with this project have included essays on JQ Adams, on his vast literary and on political interests , material on Adams Irish sources, a discussion of the actual events of the 12th century and King Dermot MacMorrough's place in Anglo-Irish relations and history. Complete contents of epic poem(four cantos) plus commentary and research notes included.
