There, in the darkness beneath the earth, he swears vengeance on the tyranny and corruption of the church. Once he escapes, thanks to the courage of Tuck and Matilda, Robyn declares war on priests and the influence of foreign clergy, and leads his outlaws in raids on church property, stealing grain and giving it free to the poor. He becomes known as The Hooded Man and the poor man's friend, always one step ahead of the helpless Sheriff of Nottingham and his allies. Privately, Robyn knows he has sown the seeds of his own destruction. A holy terror arrives in England in the form of the Inquisition, sent by the Pope to hunt down the Hooded Man as a heretic and purify England with fire.
