The Contenders: Excerpts from the 2013 National Book Award Nonfiction Finalists

The Contenders: Excerpts from the 2013 National Book Award Nonfiction Finalists brings together samples of the five Finalists for the National Book Award in Nonfiction selected by a panel of five experts from over 500 submitted books. The finalists are Book of Ages: The Life and Opinions of Jane Franklin by Jill Lepore, Hitler’s Furies: German Women in the Nazi Killing Fields by Wendy Lower, The Unwinding: An Inner History of the New America by George Packer, The Internal Enemy: Slavery and War in Virginia, 1772-1832 by Alan Taylor, and Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief by Lawrence Wright. The winner will be announced at the 64th National Book Awards on November 20, 2013.
