Oliver Sandys Shining Failure deals with the lives and problems of three young people living in the tangled jungle of post-war Britain. All are idealists in their different ways. First is delightful Pip, a girl "with hair like a gorse-bush in full bloom", a heart of gold and a mission in life. The second is Squadron-Leader David Rees, ex-war ace, to whom the very force of life itself lies in the thunder of engines above driven clouds. He, too, has a self appointed mission of a kind so strangely altruistic that it is more in tradition of a knight of the Middle Ages. The third, Noel Thankful, is a surgeon whose entire life is dedicated to his job. How does it work out for these three whose minds are single-centred upon an ideal in a world that has never been more corrupt, greedy and indifferent than it is today? Is devotion to an ideal, to a person, a profession or even a religion worth while?
This book does not set out to preach, but to entertain. Yet to those who can read beneath the fictional cloak it may point a way.... The rainbow radiance of laughter, tears, courage, hope and high romance which Oliver Sandys flings around her creations is a double rainbow irridating every page of Shining Failures.
