The Fatal Shadow

In the rural peace of the Scottish Highlands, Miss Sophia McLinn, daughter of an Edinburgh surgeon, stretches her slender means by running a summer guest-house. But the night she took in Aline Hillis and her baby in the depths of winter, she took in trouble. The trouble was represented by the young American from the oil rigs whom Aline had walked out on, and by the local lad for whom she had deserted him, found shot and drowned in the loch soon afterwards.
