Nell Gwyn was an actress and later mistress to Charles II King of England,1630-1685. Even after three cenĀturies Nell Gwyn still holds an enĀdurĀing place in the hearts of the British peoĀple. She is reĀgarded with more afĀfecĀtion than any of her riĀvals, largely forĀgotĀten today, who were misĀtresses of Charles II. For alĀmost sevĀenĀteen years she mainĀtained her poĀsiĀtion at Court, deĀlightĀing the fickle monarch with her gaiĀety, wit and irĀreĀsistible charm. He never tired of her as he did of Moll Davis, an acĀtress in the Duke's TheĀatre, who had preĀtenĀsions to be a lady. Nell never preĀtended to be other than what she was; a litĀtle cockĀney of the LonĀdon streets, who had risen to fame owing to her great abilĀity and fasĀciĀnatĀing perĀsonĀalĀity. Her very honĀesty of vice, her utter lack of preĀtence, her saucy wit capĀtiĀvated her conĀtemĀpoĀraries as they have capĀtiĀvated us ever since.
