The story of the terrible scar

It was on a summer Sunday morning that Jim first began to wonder how his Dad came to have a great puckered scar running up the outside of his left arm. He couldn't get the story out of his Dad, but when he asked his Uncle Monty, he got not one but four stories. All different, all highly coloured and all just a bit difficult to believe. It was puzzling. It was also a little disappointing, because if none of them was true, then perhaps Jim's Dad wasn't as clever and brave as they'd made him out. But then something happened in front of Jim's very eyes, so he knew for himself that his Dad was the hero of the fifth and last story about a terrible scar. Catherine Storr is one of the most original of today's writers for children. This story for the younger ones is funny, gripping and ingenious, and readers who are enthralled by the adventures of Jim's Dad will also find themselves beguiled into wondering about different kinds of reality.
