Alexander survives the Great War 0f 1914-18 and as a result of suffering from shell-shock has lost his youthful ambition and "drive". He becomes merely a chauffeur/handyman at Weatherhall Park and it is through his eyes the story unfolds.Caroline was a nurse in France who cares for a wounded senior officer who is also a lord of the realm.
