Primarily a woman's novel of a mature marriage, as Helen, haunted and striken by the tragedy of her marriage to a German, is widowed and marries faithful home-loving George. They settle down in George's home in a New England manufacturing community, and Lydia, Helen's bitter, jealous sister, comes to live with them. The friction between the sisters is enhanced by Helen's pregnancy, and George is caught between the two, until the birth of the baby catalyses all emotional, psychological stresses and precipitates a return to reasonably normal actions and thoughts.
