As President-Elect he was faced with many difficult issues, including the Secession of the South. Many Democrats seceded from the Party 1st, then 7 states declared their separation to form the new republic in Montgomery under President Jefferson Davis. This was the start of a long series of uprisings that became the Civil War. He led our nation with care and pride to the utmost. Nearly everyday he addressed the Army, the people, & had to overcome the tides of War. Horace Greely wrote to him in despair, "If the Union is irrevocably gone, then give up the needless struggle." ??? Was the Union ever revoked??? Or gone???
