In the same driving, action-filled kind of story that has led Bronc Burnett and his teammates through The Three-Two Pitch, Legion Tourney, and Fielder's Choice, Wilfred McCormick now takes that increasingly popular junior baseball team into the Western Sectional tournament. This time the team runs into a new kind of trouble—umpires—and they become the losers ins some freak decisions that give them a real psychological handicap. Winning easily at first (and learning a lot of "inside baseball" in the bargain} Bronc suddenly blows up after several unfortunate decisions, and it looks for a while as if the team's big chances for national success have disappeared. There is perhaps more suspense in Bases Loaded than in any of the previous Bronc Burnett books; the reader all but convinced that his favorite team doesn't have a chance. Whether they do finally eliminate the handicaps of overconfidence and the feeling that the breaks are against them, whether they do finally conquer San Francisco in the crucial last game—these are the big questions that make Bases Loaded one of the most exciting books in this fine series. Sports-minded boys everywhere will eat it up.
