This is a story of young love but it is much more than a story at the end of which the couple live “happily ever after”. In a rich study of three generations in Scotland and London, the theme of the young country doctor, James Mennock who married Charlotte Gailes, a professor‘s daughter, then became a great surgeon, is conventional enough. But the author keeps showing us what happened to them later, even as he tells us their love story: what life held in store for them. It is a cheerful, busy time of many happenings.
