I Dream A World: Portraits of Black Women Who Changed America

I Dream A World is a celebration in seventy-five portraits of black women who have changed our world and our times. The photographs, by the Pulitzer-prize winning photojournalist Brian Lanker, are brought together with excerpts from interviews he conducted to create powerful portraits of these highly esteemed and much loved individuals. The photography's visual richness is balanced by the women's words, as each speaks with wisdom and wit about her life's work, family and heritage, personal struggles, and hopes for the future. These women have shaped an epoch that has seen the peaks of modern civil rights and women's movements. Well known women---politicians, activists, writers, performers, and athletes---are included, as are many "firsts" ---the first woman or the first black person (or both) to become an architect, bishop, neurosurgeon, Pulitzer-prize winner, university president. But perhaps most importantly, this book documents the lives of key individuals that history books have too often overlooked. This volume, the result of an amazing two-year project by a master photographer, is a lasting tribute to seventy-six significant individuals in American history.
