At the age of eighteen. Miss Elinor Graham is certain of two things. One that she will make an indifferent school ma'am; the other that the Polite World can bring her both excitement and eventual financial security. In pursuit of her aims she goes to stay, unannounced, with the elderly Mr Jonas Webb, her late father's cousin ... How, then, does Elinor come to be accompanying young Mr Christopher Brand to his dilapidated manor in Gloucestershire?
